Software Engineer II

About the role

We are looking for a full-stack developer who is strongest on the backend. API work is the core of this role — you will build and maintain the APIs our websites, mobile apps and outside partners depend on, along with the database work behind them, and you will pick up front-end work when a feature needs it. Strong database skills matter here more than they do on most full-stack teams.

What you will do

Reports to the Senior Software Engineer

Build and maintain REST APIs used by our websites, mobile apps and outside partners

Write and optimize T-SQL — stored procedures, views and queries against a large SQL Server database

Design and change database schema as features require it

Integrate third-party services and keep those integrations healthy

Work in an existing .NET codebase, and build new services alongside it

Make front-end changes when a feature calls for them

Investigate and fix production issues in the areas you own

Debug across a large, old codebase spread over more than ten repositories. Much of this platform has been built by many developers over twenty years, and you will spend real time reading code you did not write and tracing why it behaves the way it does

Respect the logic that is already there. Before changing something, understand why it works the way it does — old code usually encodes a rule someone needed

Handle one-off data and reporting requests without letting them derail your bigger work

Work day to day with an outside development team that builds against our APIs — answering their questions, agreeing on contracts, and not breaking them when something changes

Work directly with outside vendors and partners when their data or their system is the problem

Ship features that span several repositories at once — one change often lands in the API and the website in the same week

Review teammates' code and have yours reviewed

Season and weekend coverage

Our year is not flat. Work spikes around schedule launch and through the summer season, and the deadlines in those windows are real ones — events are happening and families are registering. During the busy season developers take turns being near a computer on weekends so someone can respond if something breaks. It is a rotation shared across the team, not a permanent on-call burden on one person, but it is a real part of the job and we would rather say so up front.

What we are looking for

C# and .NET experience, including working in a codebase you did not write

Strong SQL Server and T-SQL skills, including query tuning

Experience building and consuming REST APIs

Working knowledge of a modern JavaScript framework

Comfort with Git and pull requests

Clear written and spoken communication with people who are not developers

A track record of finishing what you start

Eagerness to learn tools and platforms you have not used before

Interest in why a feature is being asked for, not only how to build it

Care with sensitive data. This platform holds personal information about minors and their families, and that shapes how we build

Nice to have

Data engineering or analytics experience

Cloud experience, ideally Azure

Reporting and BI tools

Mobile development

A basic understanding of baseball or softball
