Position Summary:
The Claims Microservices Senior Software Engineer is a key contributor to the Claims Platform engineering team and is responsible for designing, developing, modernizing, delivering, and supporting secure, scalable, cloud-ready APIs and microservices that enable enterprise claims capabilities. The role combines hands-on software engineering with technical leadership across the full product lifecycle, from discovery and architecture through deployment, observability, production support, and continuous improvement.
This engineer works closely with product managers, business partners, architects, security, cloud platform teams, DevOps, quality engineering, data teams, and consuming application teams to deliver reusable claims services and reliable integrations. The position is expected to champion engineering standards, mentor other engineers, and help translate complex claims-processing needs into maintainable API solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support of RESTful APIs and Spring Boot microservices for claims processing, claims detail, treatment history, coordination of benefits, batch processing, and related enterprise capabilities.
Create production-ready software using sound data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and frameworks, with strong attention to maintainability, scalability, resiliency, security, performance, and operational simplicity.
Own features and services end to end, including technical design, coding, automated testing, documentation, release readiness, deployment validation, monitoring, incident response, and production health.
Provide technical leadership for API modernization, service decomposition, integration patterns, and migration from legacy service implementations to cloud-native architectures.
Define and promote consistent API standards, including resource modeling, versioning, error handling, idempotency, authentication and authorization, backward compatibility, and lifecycle management.
Build secure integrations using API management and industry-standard security patterns such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, TLS, secrets management, and least-privilege access.
Collaborate with DevOps and cloud platform teams to build and maintain CI/CD and GitOps pipelines, container images, deployment configurations, environment controls, and automated release processes.
Implement observability through structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, dashboards, alerts, synthetic monitoring, and actionable service-level indicators.
Design and execute unit, component, contract, integration, end-to-end, performance, resiliency, and security testing. Apply test-driven development where appropriate and improve automated quality gates.
Perform code and design reviews, provide technical guidance, mentor software engineers, and support knowledge sharing and cross-training across the team.
Estimate delivery effort, identify dependencies and risks, evaluate technical trade-offs, and communicate recommendations clearly to engineering leaders and business stakeholders.
Partner with consuming teams and external integration partners to troubleshoot issues, validate interface contracts, plan releases, and ensure reliable adoption of claims APIs.
Participate in Agile planning, refinement, demonstrations, retrospectives, and continuous-improvement activities using Jira, Confluence, and related collaboration tools.
Support production and pre-production environments, including participation in an on-call rotation and timely resolution of incidents, defects, vulnerabilities, and operational problems.
Identify and reduce technical debt, obsolete patterns, duplicated business logic, security gaps, and reliability risks while balancing roadmap delivery and operational commitments.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelors or masters degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent technical education and relevant experience.
Minimum of 7 years of professional software development experience, including substantial hands-on experience designing and developing secure, high-performing enterprise applications and web services.
Advanced proficiency in Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, RESTful API design, object-oriented development, and microservice architecture.
Demonstrated experience leading technical design and delivering complex services across the complete software development lifecycle.
Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, data access patterns, transaction management, query optimization, and integration with enterprise data platforms.
Experience with automated testing, test-driven development, unit testing, mocking frameworks, contract testing, and integration testing.
Experience deploying containerized applications to a public or private cloud platform using Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience building and supporting CI/CD pipelines and source-control workflows using GitHub, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Maven, Gradle, or comparable tools.
Experience implementing application monitoring and troubleshooting production systems using platforms such as Datadog and Splunk.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to explain technical choices and trade-offs to varied audiences.
Experience working in Agile delivery teams and collaborating across product, architecture, security, DevOps, quality engineering, and business functions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with healthcare technology, dental or medical claims processing, claims adjudication, eligibility, benefits, provider, member, payment, or treatment-history data.
Experience modernizing legacy SOAP or application services into Spring Boot REST APIs and cloud-native microservices.
Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure API Management, managed identity, Key Vault, Azure Monitor, and related platform services.
Experience with Kubernetes ecosystem technologies such as Helm, Argo CD, Istio, Knative, NGINX, and GitOps operating models.
Experience with messaging and event-driven architecture using Apache Kafka, IBM MQ, ActiveMQ, or RabbitMQ.
Experience with distributed caching technologies such as Redis, Coherence, or Hazelcast.
Knowledge of API-first development, OpenAPI specifications, consumer-driven contract testing, API gateways, APIOps, and enterprise API governance.
Experience with performance engineering, high-volume transaction processing, disaster recovery, resiliency testing, and production-readiness assessments.
Experience using AI-assisted software development tools responsibly to improve engineering productivity, testing, documentation, or code quality.
