About the role

Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Location: Seattle, WA (Primarily Onsite)

Help Build the Embedded Foundation for Next-Generation Hybrid Mining Systems

Are you a hands-on embedded software engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of hardware, real-time software, and system architecture? Do you thrive in an R&D environment where you'll help define the technical direction of a platform from the ground up?

We are seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join a growing team developing advanced hybrid power and control systems for industrial mining applications. This is an opportunity to work on early-stage technology development, helping establish the embedded software architecture that will support future products for years to come.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys low-level software development, board bring-up, middleware design, real-time operating systems, and close collaboration with hardware, controls, and research teams.

What You'll Do

Design, develop, and maintain embedded software primarily in C (approximately 80%) with selective use of C++.

Lead development and integration of software running on FreeRTOS-based multicore embedded platforms.

Create and maintain the RTOS framework that serves as the foundation for future product development.

Develop lightweight middleware and runtime interfaces that bridge controls software with underlying embedded platforms.

Collaborate with Controls Engineers to integrate existing Simulink-generated control algorithms into production-oriented embedded software architectures.

Design software abstraction layers that enable portability of controls applications across future platforms and architectures.

Support the creation of a lightweight runtime environment that facilitates future migration and integration with AUTOSAR-style architectures when business needs require it.

Perform board support package (BSP) development, hardware bring-up, debugging, and validation for new development boards and custom hardware.

Work directly with microcontrollers, processors, system-on-modules (SOMs), and custom PCB designs during early-stage product development.

Develop and debug software for multicore real-time processing environments.

Design and implement interprocessor communication, mailbox architectures, synchronization mechanisms, and DMA-based data movement solutions.

Investigate and resolve complex software and system-level issues through root cause analysis and structured corrective actions.

Participate in software verification activities including unit, integration, SIL, and HIL testing.

Work closely with Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Controls Engineering, and Research & Technology teams to define requirements and software interfaces.

Provide technical leadership and mentorship while helping establish engineering best practices across the organization.

What Makes This Opportunity Unique

Opportunity to define and build a software platform that is expected to support products for the next 5+ years.

Significant influence on software architecture decisions and technology direction.

Highly collaborative R&D environment focused on rapid innovation and prototyping.

Exposure to cutting-edge industrial hybrid power systems and electrification technologies.

Ability to work close to the hardware and influence system-level design decisions.

Long-term growth opportunity within a rapidly evolving engineering organization.

Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related STEM field.

Experience

7+ years of embedded software development experience.

Strong understanding of embedded software architecture and real-time systems.

Technical Skills

Strong proficiency in Embedded C development.

Experience developing software using FreeRTOS or similar RTOS environments.

Experience with multicore embedded systems and real-time applications.

Board support package (BSP) development and hardware bring-up experience.

Experience debugging software at the hardware, firmware, and system levels.

Familiarity with ARM-based embedded processors and architectures.

Experience with:

Multicore processing

Threading and task management

Mailboxes and interprocessor communication

DMA engines

Interrupt-driven systems

Memory management in embedded environments

Experience using Git and modern software development workflows.

Strong systems-thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Ability to adapt and learn new technologies in a fast-paced research and development environment.

Experience with common embedded processor families including:

STM32

NXP

Infineon TriCore

ARM Cortex-based processors

Experience integrating Simulink-generated controls software into embedded targets.

Experience developing middleware, runtime environments, or software abstraction layers.

Experience with Texas Instruments AM64x/AM644x devices or similar System-on-Module (SOM) platforms.

Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as CAN and J1939.

Knowledge of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) validation methods.

Linux development experience.

Python scripting experience for automation, testing, or development support.

Success in This Role

The successful candidate is a technically curious engineer who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys learning new platforms and technologies, and can quickly contribute in a research-oriented environment. You are comfortable moving between software architecture discussions, middleware development, board bring-up activities, and real-time embedded software implementation.

You understand how to create scalable software foundations while balancing the realities of rapid prototyping and product development. Most importantly, you're excited about helping build a platform from its early stages and becoming a long-term contributor to the future of industrial hybrid mining technologies.
