About the Role

This is a hybrid engineering and product-enablement role. The Lead Software Engineer will design and build backend financial and payments system flows while also translating business needs into clear technical requirements, and acting as a force-multiplier who sets up the rest of the engineering team for success. The role does not require direct reports, but does require comfort influencing others, driving alignment across teams, and demonstrating technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering and Architecture

Design, build, and maintain backend financial and payments system flows (e.g., core banking, ACH, wire, card, and digital asset transaction processing).

Influence software architecture and lead design decisions for the Platform, with particular focus on payments and money-movement systems.

Develop, test, and launch new features and releases for the Platform.

Document processes and key data flows.

Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and support audit certification efforts, including documenting systems for regulatory and internal audit purposes.

Product & Requirements Enablement

Partner with engineering, product, operations, and compliance teams to translate business needs into clear, actionable technical requirements and specifications.

Organize and decompose business requirements into well-structured functional and technical specs that other engineers can execute against.

Act as a bridge between business stakeholders and the engineering team, clarifying scope, surfacing technical trade-offs, and reducing ambiguity before development begins.

Document and improve engineering processes, workflows, and SDLC practices to increase team efficiency and knowledge sharing.

Leadership & Team Enablement

Set technical direction and best practices that enable other engineers to deliver high-quality work independently.

Influence and align cross-functional partners and engineering peers without relying on formal authority or direct reports.

As needed mentor engineers on logic, code quality, and requirements-writing practices.

Make independent, sound decisions on system design and process improvements within defined parameters.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of 7 years of experience in software engineering, including designing, building, deploying, scaling, and maintaining modern, cloud-based production services, with knowledge of service-oriented architecture.

Proven experience designing and building backend financial or payments system flows (e.g., APIs workflows supporting core banking, payment rails, ledgers, settlement, or digital asset transaction processing).

Proficiency writing high-quality, well-tested code using one or more languages (e.g., Python, Next.js, React, Golang, C#), building APIs, and building/using databases (e.g., Postgres, DynamoDB).

Demonstrated ability to gather and translate business requirements into technical specifications.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear, detailed technical and functional documentation.

Leadership and influencing skills — comfortable guiding and developing other engineers and driving alignment across teams without formal direct-report authority.

Self-directed work style with the ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound independent decisions.

Salary and Other Compensation:

The annual salary for this position is between $125K - $160K annually. Factors which may affect pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
