About The Role

The Senior AI Engineer (AI Foundations) at Capital One plays a pivotal role in advancing the company's AI capabilities by designing, developing, and deploying foundational AI systems. This position involves collaborating with cross-functional teams—including engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers—to create responsible, scalable, and high-performance AI solutions that impact millions of customers. The role requires a deep understanding of large language models, AI infrastructure, and optimization techniques to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of AI applications. As a key contributor to the technical vision, you will help shape the future of AI at Capital One, ensuring that the company's AI systems are innovative, reliable, and aligned with responsible AI principles. Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in engineering, mathematics, and AI research, with a passion for building impactful systems. A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or related fields is required, along with at least three years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies. Alternatively, candidates with a master's degree and at least one year of relevant experience will also be considered. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, or Java is essential. Preferred qualifications include extensive experience deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, and a solid understanding of AI service development, optimization techniques, and state-of-the-art research. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, innovation, and applying scientific advancements to real-world problems.

Responsibilities

Partner with multidisciplinary teams to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer interactions and operational efficiency within Capital One.

Design, implement, test, and support AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, and observability.

Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, and PyTorch to build scalable solutions.

Innovate and implement state-of-the-art optimization techniques for large language models to improve performance metrics such as latency, throughput, and cost-efficiency.

Contribute to the development of the technical vision and strategic roadmap for foundational AI systems at Capital One.

Ensure responsible AI practices by incorporating governance, safety guardrails, and ethical considerations into all AI development processes.

Continuously monitor, evaluate, and improve AI models and systems to maintain high standards of quality, reliability, and compliance.

Stay current with emerging research and industry trends, applying new techniques and insights to enhance AI capabilities.
