About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal AI Engineer to join our team at LexisNexis. This role is focused on designing, developing, and implementing advanced AI solutions that support our mission-critical applications. As a Principal AI Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical architecture of AI capabilities, working closely with cross-functional teams including product managers, data scientists, software engineers, security professionals, and government stakeholders. Your expertise will be essential in translating complex business and government requirements into scalable, secure, and innovative AI systems. Initially, your responsibilities will center on solution design and hands-on development, with opportunities to grow into a broader AI Architect role that influences enterprise standards, technical strategy, and governance frameworks across the organization.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background in computer science, engineering, data science, or related fields, supplemented by extensive professional experience in software engineering and AI development. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience is required. You should have demonstrated proficiency in Python, APIs, cloud services, data pipelines, and source control systems. Hands-on experience with modern AI technologies such as large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, and AI agents is essential. Familiarity with cloud-native architecture, system integration, security practices, and AI evaluation frameworks is also necessary. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across diverse teams are critical, along with the capacity to evaluate and make informed decisions about technical alternatives. Prior experience working in regulated environments, especially within government or federal sectors, is highly desirable. Certifications in cloud, security, or AI are a plus.
Responsibilities
As a Principal AI Engineer, your primary responsibilities will include:
Designing, prototyping, and deploying AI-powered applications, services, and workflows that meet mission and business needs.
Translating complex requirements into practical AI solutions, leveraging technologies such as large language models, natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning.
Developing reusable AI components, APIs, evaluation frameworks, and reference implementations to streamline deployment and maintenance.
Integrating AI capabilities seamlessly with existing enterprise platforms, data sources, and workflows to enhance operational efficiency.
Balancing rapid experimentation with disciplined engineering practices to ensure secure, reliable, and scalable production systems.
Evaluating AI models, platforms, and vendors based on performance, cost, security, and scalability criteria.
Contributing to enterprise architecture, establishing AI standards, and creating reference architectures alongside senior architects.
Providing technical guidance, conducting code reviews, and mentoring engineering and data science teams to foster best practices.
Supporting government and stakeholder engagement through technical discovery sessions, demonstrations, and proposal development.
Staying informed about evolving government AI policies, standards, and responsible-AI practices to ensure compliance and ethical deployment.
