About The Role

The Principal AI Engineer II at AbbVie is a senior technical leadership role responsible for defining and advancing the company's artificial intelligence strategy, architecture, and engineering standards. This role involves leading the development, deployment, and scaling of AI solutions that drive productivity and innovation across multiple business units. As a discipline expert, the engineer will investigate emerging technologies, design scalable and secure AI platforms, and establish best practices for AI lifecycle management. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams including data scientists, software engineers, regulatory, and security stakeholders to deliver compliant, reliable, and impactful AI solutions. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in AI, cloud engineering, and enterprise architecture, with a proven track record in deploying production-grade AI systems in regulated environments.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field with 9 years of experience, or Master’s degree with 8 years, or PhD with 4 years’ experience.

Proven experience designing, deploying, and maintaining large-scale AI and machine learning systems in production environments.

Strong expertise in AI/platform engineering, including scalable platforms, reusable components, and enterprise-grade solutions.

Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and integrating AI solutions within cloud environments.

Solid understanding of secure software development, CI/CD pipelines, containerization, automated testing, and operational monitoring.

Experience working within regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, or medical devices.

Knowledge of risk management, validation, data integrity, cybersecurity, privacy, and compliance standards.

Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical and business decisions across organizational boundaries.

Exceptional communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Demonstrated leadership in mentoring engineers and promoting best practices in engineering and AI development.

Responsibilities

Define and refine AI engineering strategy, architecture standards, and roadmaps aligned with AbbVie's overall business and technology goals.

Design and build secure, scalable, and reusable AI platforms, services, and developer tools to facilitate enterprise adoption.

Lead the end-to-end lifecycle of AI solutions, from ideation and prototyping to deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

Integrate AI platforms with AWS services and enterprise data, ensuring seamless connectivity with security and infrastructure components.

Establish best practices for AI evaluation, testing, versioning, release management, observability, and incident response.

Apply risk-based approaches to ensure compliance with GxP, data privacy, cybersecurity, and responsible AI principles.

Collaborate with Quality, Regulatory, Legal, Privacy, and Scientific teams to develop fit-for-purpose AI solutions that meet regulatory standards.

Serve as a trusted technical advisor, influencing decision-making and facilitating alignment among technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Evaluate emerging AI technologies, lead innovation initiatives, and guide proof-of-concept projects into scalable production systems.

Mentor engineering teams, promote knowledge sharing, and represent AbbVie in technical communities and industry forums.
