About Sanmai

Sanmai is a Public Benefit Corporation advancing breakthrough neurotechnology through clinical expertise and AI-enabled precision medical devices. Our flagship technology uses focused ultrasound to open a new path in neurotherapeutics — helping people with mental health and neurological conditions find the relief they need. We're a mission-driven team that pairs scientific rigor with real human impact.

The Role

We're looking for a Software Engineer to help design, build, and evolve the software architecture behind our neurotechnology platform — from internal tooling to production-ready application and firmware code. You'll also own software verification and validation to ensure compliance with medical device standards, working cross-functionally with engineering, clinical, and regulatory teams across multiple locations. This is a rare chance to shape the software direction of a company working at the frontier of neuroscience, AI, and mental health.

What You'll Do

Design and implement scalable applications, and write application and firmware code that meets performance, safety, and regulatory requirements

Contribute to system architecture and lead software design reviews

Build and maintain internal tools that streamline operations

Own software V&V activities, including white-box testing, in compliance with ISO 13485

Partner with quality and regulatory teams to support audits and filings

Work in an agile process alongside cross-functional teams

What You Should Have

Demonstrated leadership in software architecture and implementation

Experience driving software V&V in compliance with ISO 13485

Advanced proficiency in Python, C++, Qt 6 SDK, and PySide6, with solid object-oriented design

Comfortable across Windows and Linux, with build and CI tooling (Make, CMake, Jenkins), Bash scripting, and Python unit testing (PyTest/unittest)

Understanding of Secure Boot (Intel CPUs)

Strong knowledge of database systems and software design patterns

Proficiency with Jira, Confluence, Git, and XRay

Bachelor's in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (Master's preferred)

Nice to have: 5+ years developing for regulated medical devices, 5+ years with Rust, ML frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow), CUDA/OpenCL, Ubuntu customization, Libvirt or Xen, and Verilog

Comfortable with high autonomy in a fast-moving startup and skilled at communicating complexity to technical and non-technical audiences

What You'll Achieve

You'll design and scale the software platform behind our flagship neurotherapeutic device, lead the V&V processes that support FDA submissions and international approvals, and help bridge neuroscience, software, and user experience into one coherent technical vision.

Full-time, based in South San Francisco, CA. Salary range: $150,000–$160,000/year.
