About The Role

The Principal AI Engineer II is a senior technical leadership role responsible for defining and advancing the artificial intelligence strategy within AbbVie. This role involves designing scalable, secure, and reusable AI platforms and solutions that support enterprise-wide adoption. The ideal candidate will act as a technical expert and thought leader, managing complex AI and machine learning systems from conception through deployment and ongoing optimization. They will collaborate with cross-functional teams including Data Science, IT, Quality, Regulatory, and Business units to ensure solutions meet compliance standards and operational excellence. The role also involves mentoring engineering teams, evaluating emerging AI technologies, and guiding innovative proof-of-concept projects into sustainable production environments. The successful candidate will influence decision-making processes, ensure alignment with enterprise architecture, and promote responsible AI practices across the organization.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 9 years' experience, Master's degree with 8 years' experience, or PhD with 4 years' experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Proven experience designing, deploying, and operating large-scale AI and machine learning systems in production environments.

Extensive experience in AI/platform engineering, including building scalable platforms, reusable components, and production-grade AI solutions.

Strong expertise in AWS cloud services and integrating AI solutions with enterprise data, security, and infrastructure environments.

Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, including secure design, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and monitoring.

Experience working within regulated environments such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, biotech, or medical devices.

Knowledge of the full solution lifecycle from feasibility and design to deployment and operational support.

Deep understanding of risk management, validation, data integrity, cybersecurity, privacy, and documentation standards.

Excellent stakeholder management skills, capable of influencing technical and business decisions across organizational boundaries.

Exceptional communication skills to effectively engage with senior leadership, technical teams, and external partners.

Demonstrated ability to mentor engineering teams and promote best practices in AI development and deployment.

Responsibilities

Define and develop AI engineering strategies, architectures, standards, and roadmaps aligned with AbbVie's business goals.

Design and build secure, scalable, and reusable AI platforms, services, and developer tools to facilitate enterprise adoption.

Lead the development of production-grade AI solutions from initial concept through deployment, validation, and ongoing maintenance.

Integrate AI platforms with AWS services, enterprise data systems, and infrastructure environments while ensuring security and compliance.

Establish best practices for solution evaluation, testing, version control, release management, monitoring, and incident response.

Apply risk-based approaches to ensure compliance with GxP, data integrity, privacy, cybersecurity, and responsible AI standards.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including Quality, Regulatory, Legal, Privacy, and Scientific stakeholders to deliver fit-for-purpose solutions.

Serve as a trusted technical advisor, facilitating alignment and influencing decisions across technical and non-technical audiences.

Evaluate emerging AI technologies, lead innovation initiatives, and guide proof-of-concept projects into scalable solutions.

Mentor engineers, promote knowledge sharing, and contribute to the advancement of engineering practices within the organization.

Represent AbbVie in technical communities, industry forums, and partner engagements to foster innovation and thought leadership.
