About The Role
LexisNexis, in collaboration with hackajob, is seeking a highly skilled Principal AI Engineer to join their team in the Architecture Track. This role is designed for an experienced AI professional who excels in designing and building scalable, secure, and production-grade AI solutions. The ideal candidate will possess a strong engineering background, deep understanding of modern AI architectures, and a passion for translating complex business and government requirements into innovative AI capabilities. The Principal AI Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams—including product managers, data scientists, software engineers, security specialists, and government stakeholders—to develop and implement AI solutions that meet stringent security and compliance standards. Initially, the focus will be on solution design and hands-on implementation, with opportunities to grow into a broader architectural and strategic leadership role, establishing standards, governance, and best practices across the organization.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, data science, information systems, or a related field, or demonstrate equivalent practical experience. Significant professional experience in software engineering, particularly in delivering production applications or platforms, is essential. Hands-on experience with AI, machine learning, and data-intensive solutions—especially involving large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, and AI agents—is required. Proficiency in Python, APIs, cloud services, data pipelines, and source control is necessary. A solid understanding of cloud-native architecture, system integration, security practices, and observability is critical. Candidates should have excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences. Experience working across multiple teams—including product, engineering, data, security, and business—is highly valued. Additional qualifications include familiarity with government security standards, experience in regulated environments, and relevant certifications in cloud, security, or AI fields.
Responsibilities
As a Principal AI Engineer, your responsibilities will encompass a broad range of technical and strategic tasks. You will design, prototype, and develop AI-powered applications, services, and workflows that address mission-critical needs. Translating business, user, and government requirements into practical, scalable AI solutions will be a core aspect of your role. You will leverage technologies such as large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, computer vision, and natural language processing to create innovative solutions. Building reusable AI components, APIs, and evaluation frameworks will be vital to ensure efficiency and scalability. You will also be responsible for integrating AI capabilities with enterprise platforms, data sources, and existing applications, balancing rapid experimentation with secure, reliable production deployment. In addition, you will contribute to the development of solution architectures, establishing standards and best practices for AI integration across platforms. Partnering with senior architects, you will help define AI architecture patterns, guardrails, and reference models. Providing technical guidance, conducting code reviews, mentoring team members, and supporting cross-team collaboration will be key leadership components. You will participate in architecture reviews, documenting decisions, tradeoffs, and risks, while also supporting government and stakeholder engagement through technical discovery sessions, demonstrations, and proposals. Ensuring solutions adhere to security, privacy, and compliance standards—such as NIST, FedRAMP, and FISMA—is essential. Moving prototypes into secure, scalable production environments and maintaining ongoing evaluation and monitoring of AI models and systems will also be part of your responsibilities.
