Job Description

You will own Sage Care’s agent platform, designing the orchestration and reasoning systems that drive live patient interactions. As the lead architect for agent behavior, you’ll ensure LLM-powered workflows are reliable, observable, and performant at scale. Your work directly impacts patients by ensuring they never experience a dropped call or failed triage.

Location

Palo Alto, USA

Why this role is remarkable

Ship production-grade AI agents that are already live in hospital systems, handling real patient calls where reliability and empathy are non-negotiable.

Join a high-pedigree founding team including the co-inventor of the iPhone and founders of Carbon Health and rideOS, backed by General Catalyst.

Lead a critical technical migration by bringing the event loop in-house, defining the foundational architecture that every other engineer will build upon.

What You Will Do

Design and own the agent platform architecture, focusing on orchestration, tool coordination, and dependable multi-step reasoning workflows for live calls.

Build robust failure handling and recovery systems to make non-deterministic LLM behavior consistent and reliable under real-world production loads.

Optimize the entire AI stack for latency, cost, and correctness while working closely with voice and telephony infrastructure teams.

The ideal candidate

Has 7+ years of software engineering experience with a track record of building and operating production AI or conversational systems end-to-end.

Possesses deep expertise in LLM orchestration, agent harnesses, and debugging complex non-deterministic systems where performance and reliability are critical.

Demonstrates strong ownership of production systems, including on-call experience and the ability to mentor other engineers on AI systems design.
