- About the Opportunity:
The Staff Software Engineer, Data role is a key technical leadership position within the data engineering team responsible for the ELT platform that supports the DataHub product and internal analytics. This position involves shaping the technical strategy, designing solutions for complex problems, mentoring engineers, and enhancing the team’s overall capability. The role directly impacts the platform’s effectiveness and the organization’s ability to deliver improved healthcare solutions.
- Responsibilities:
Drive the technical direction of the ELT platform with a multi-quarter strategic focus
Write design documents to guide major initiatives and establish team standards
Decompose large, ambiguous projects into actionable work for various engineering levels
Collaborate with product, leadership, and engineering teams to align platform strategy with business goals
Provide architectural guidance and make decisions on trade-offs across projects
Identify and address systemic risks, scalability, and reliability issues proactively
Deliver deep, substantive feedback on code reviews and design documents
Mentor senior engineers and guide growth paths for all team members
Establish and enforce standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, and HIPAA compliance
Lead responses to complex incidents and drive preventive follow-up work
Utilize AI-assisted tools to enhance team productivity and define related practices
- Requirements:
7+ years of professional software or data engineering experience with proven technical leadership
Expertise in SQL and Python
Hands-on experience with Airflow or similar orchestrators, dbt or modern transformation frameworks, and cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift
Experience addressing scaling challenges at data, warehouse, and infrastructure levels
Knowledge in areas like data platform architecture, HIPAA-compliant data handling, or reliability engineering
Ability to anticipate design flaws, edge cases, and organizational risks early
Proven track record of owning technical roadmaps and delivering complex projects
Experience mentoring engineers
Comfort working across application, infrastructure, deployment, observability, and incident response layers
Judicious use of AI-assisted development and ability to set team standards
Commitment to quality with strong emphasis on testing
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Pragmatic approach to balancing long-term investments, technical debt, and delivery
