Software Engineer I, Enterprise Financial Technology
About the role
Job Description
Our Opportunity
As a Software Engineer I on Chewy's Enterprise Financial Technology team, you will help build the cloud-native systems that move money through the business — the services, integrations, and data pipelines that connect our commerce, warehouse, procurement, and marketplace platforms to Oracle ERP. Every order placed by a pet parent eventually becomes an invoice, a payment, a tax calculation, and a journal entry, and this team owns that path.
You will work on production systems alongside senior engineers who will review your designs and code, starting with well-defined features and growing into larger components as your understanding develops. Accuracy matters here, and you will learn to test thoroughly and verify your own work as a matter of habit. No prior finance or ERP background is expected — we will teach you the domain.
What You'll Do
Design, develop, test, and maintain cloud-native applications and services supporting Chewy's enterprise financial systems.
Build APIs, event-driven integrations, and batch data pipelines connecting commerce, warehouse, procurement, marketplace, and ERP platforms.
Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and finance and accounting stakeholders to deliver scalable and reliable software solutions.
Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate software design, implementation, testing, documentation, and debugging while applying sound engineering judgment and code quality standards.
Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code following established software engineering and secure development practices.
Write SQL to investigate defects, validate the results of your work, and support financial reconciliation activities.
Participate in code reviews, design discussions, sprint planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Support the services you contribute to in production, and learn monitoring, troubleshooting, and operational excellence practices.
Learn modern software architecture patterns, cloud technologies, and the financial processes these systems support while contributing to production software.
What You'll Need
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Information Technology, or a related technical field.
1-2 years of experience developing software using Java.
Experience building applications on AWS or another major cloud platform.
Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software design principles.
Experience with SQL and relational databases.
Familiarity with Git and modern software development workflows.
Curiosity about AI-assisted software development and an eagerness to incorporate AI tools responsibly throughout the software development lifecycle (requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation).
Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
Attention to detail and a willingness to verify your own work in an environment where errors carry material business impact.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, customer-focused engineering environment.
Bonus
Experience with Spring Boot, REST APIs, microservices, or event-driven architectures.
Exposure to AWS services such as Lambda, Step Functions, ECS, EKS, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, RDS, or API Gateway.
Exposure to Kotlin, Python, or another additional programming language.
Familiarity with software engineering best practices, including code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing (JUnit, Mockito, or similar), observability, and DevOps.
Experience using AI coding assistants (such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar tools) to improve engineering productivity while maintaining high code quality.
Exposure to front-end development using React.js and TypeScript.
Experience working in Agile development environments (Scrum or Kanban).
Knowledge of distributed systems, enterprise integrations, or financial, ERP, payments, or marketplace technologies is a plus.
The base salary range for this role is $97,500 - $160,000.00.
The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location.
