About The Role

The Lead Machine Learning Engineer at Capital One is a pivotal role responsible for designing, developing, and deploying scalable machine learning solutions that address complex business challenges. This position involves working within an Agile environment to productionize machine learning models and systems, ensuring they are robust, efficient, and aligned with organizational goals. The role requires a deep understanding of machine learning architecture, cloud technologies, and programming languages such as Python, GoLang, and Java. As a senior technical leader, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams including data scientists, data engineers, and product managers to deliver innovative solutions that enhance decision-making and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or a related field. A minimum of six years of experience in designing and building data-intensive solutions using distributed computing frameworks is required. Candidates should have at least four years of hands-on programming experience with Python, Scala, or Java, along with a minimum of two years of experience specifically focused on building, scaling, and optimizing machine learning systems. Preferred qualifications include a master’s or doctoral degree and at least three years of experience developing production-ready data pipelines that serve ML models.

Responsibilities

The Lead Machine Learning Engineer will be responsible for a broad set of activities, including but not limited to:

Designing, building, and deploying machine learning models and components that solve real-world business problems in collaboration with product and data science teams.

Informing infrastructure decisions based on understanding of ML modeling techniques, data, feature selection, hyperparameter tuning, and validation methods.

Developing, testing, and automating application code to solve complex problems, ensuring robustness and scalability.

Collaborating within Agile teams to create software that enables advanced big data and machine learning applications.

Retraining, maintaining, and monitoring models in production environments to ensure optimal performance and accuracy.

Leveraging cloud-based architectures and platforms, such as AWS, to deliver scalable ML solutions.

Constructing and optimizing data pipelines to efficiently feed machine learning models with high-quality data.

Implementing continuous integration and continuous deployment practices, including automated testing and monitoring, to facilitate seamless deployment cycles.

Ensuring all code adheres to security best practices, models are governed from a risk perspective, and responsible AI principles are followed, including explainability and fairness.

Utilizing programming languages like Python, GoLang, and Java to develop and maintain scalable ML systems.
