About The Role
Principal AI Engineer - Architecture Track
LexisNexis is seeking a highly skilled and proactive Principal AI Engineer to join its innovative team. This role is designed for an experienced AI professional who excels in designing and developing scalable, secure, and production-ready artificial intelligence solutions. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of modern AI architectures, extensive hands-on experience with AI development, and a strategic mindset to grow into a broader AI architecture leadership position. The Principal AI Engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including product managers, data scientists, software engineers, security professionals, and government stakeholders—to translate complex business and mission requirements into effective AI capabilities. This role involves both hands-on solution development and strategic oversight, including establishing architecture standards, technical governance, and guiding cross-team initiatives to ensure scalable and secure AI deployments.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, data science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Significant professional software engineering experience, especially in delivering production applications or platforms, is essential. Proven hands-on experience with AI, machine learning, or data-intensive solutions is required, along with proficiency in Python, APIs, cloud services, data pipelines, and source control. Familiarity with modern generative AI patterns such as large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, and AI agents is highly desirable. Candidates should have a solid understanding of cloud-native architecture, system integration, security practices, and evaluation of technical alternatives. Effective communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively across diverse teams, and the capacity to incorporate security, privacy, and ethical considerations into AI solutions are critical. Preferred qualifications include experience with government contracting, cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and relevant certifications in cloud, security, or AI fields.
Responsibilities
AI Solution Design and Development:
Design, prototype, and implement AI-powered applications, services, agents, and workflows aligned with business and government mission requirements.
Develop solutions utilizing large language models, retrieval-augmented generation, natural language processing, computer vision, and other AI technologies.
Create reusable AI components, APIs, evaluation frameworks, and reference implementations to streamline deployment and scalability.
Integrate AI capabilities seamlessly with enterprise platforms, data sources, and existing applications, ensuring security and reliability.
Balance rapid experimentation with disciplined engineering practices to deliver secure, scalable, and maintainable AI systems.
Evaluate AI models, platforms, and vendors based on performance, security, cost-effectiveness, and mission fit.
Architecture And Technical Leadership
Contribute to the development of comprehensive solution architectures covering applications, data, models, security, and infrastructure.
Partner with senior architects to establish AI architecture standards, patterns, and best practices.
Guide teams in making informed decisions about AI capabilities, including open-source, commercial, and internally developed solutions.
Identify opportunities for creating shared AI services and reusable capabilities across projects and agencies.
Participate in architecture reviews, documenting technical decisions, tradeoffs, and potential risks.
Provide mentorship, code reviews, and technical support to engineering and data science teams, fostering skill development and best practices.
Take ownership of end-to-end AI solution architecture and contribute to broader technical strategies.
Government And Stakeholder Engagement
Support technical discovery sessions, demonstrations, proofs of concept, and proposal development for government projects.
Communicate complex AI concepts, limitations, and risks clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Assist in transitioning successful prototypes into secure, supportable, and scalable operational solutions.
Stay informed about evolving government AI policies, standards, and responsible AI practices to ensure compliance and ethical deployment.
