About The Role
Are you passionate about advancing artificial intelligence and building scalable machine learning systems? LexisNexis is seeking a highly skilled Principal Machine Learning Engineer to lead the design, development, and deployment of next-generation AI-driven legal research and analytics products. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of AI, software engineering, and legal technology, contributing to enterprise-grade solutions that handle complex unstructured data. You will be instrumental in shaping the architecture of large language model (LLM) infrastructure, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, and autonomous agent frameworks, enabling LexisNexis to deliver innovative and intelligent legal tools worldwide. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of machine learning, distributed systems, and AI platform development, with a focus on building robust, ethical, and scalable solutions.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have over 10 years of experience in machine learning and software engineering, demonstrating a proven track record of designing and deploying large-scale AI systems. A master's degree or bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is highly desirable, with preference given to candidates holding advanced degrees. Strong expertise in system design, architecture, and engineering of AI features catering to large user bases and handling extensive unstructured data is essential. Experience in deploying machine learning models to production environments, ensuring reliability, scalability, and security, is critical. Additionally, familiarity with responsible AI practices, data governance, and compliance standards will be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving skills, leadership capabilities, and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams are also required.
Responsibilities
Provide architectural guidance and technical leadership for AI/ML system development and deployment.
Establish and promote engineering best practices for machine learning system design, testing, and operationalization.
Conduct design reviews, performance assessments, and contribute to the technical roadmap planning.
Architect and oversee distributed machine learning systems that support multiple global products and services.
Standardize infrastructure patterns for large language model (LLM) serving and retrieval systems across platforms.
Define and implement enterprise-ready agentic frameworks that enable autonomous decision-making processes.
Develop multi-step reasoning systems and determine the optimal balance between deterministic workflows and autonomous agents.
Implement safety guardrails, traceability mechanisms, and safety layers to ensure compliance and reliability.
Create evaluation frameworks to measure reasoning quality, hallucination rates, and system robustness.
Establish and enforce CI/CD standards to streamline the machine learning lifecycle management.
Ensure all AI solutions adhere to enterprise data governance policies and responsible AI standards.

Compensation packages are competitive and may include annual incentive bonuses, with the U.S. base pay range for this role being $136,100 to $252,800, depending on experience and location.
