Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Software Engineer I in Boca Raton, FL.

At Florida Atlantic University, the Software Engineer I supports the mission of the Institute for Smarter Cities, Spaces, and Health to develop innovation technologies and software solutions that advance smarter cities, spaces, and health through collaborative research, data driven insights and real-world impact.

Summary Of Responsibilities:

Designs, builds, tests, and maintains software systems with minimal supervision.

Develops back-end services, APIs, and user-facing front-end components.

Designs, implements, and maintains databases, including data models, schemas, and queries, and optimizes them for performance and data integrity.

Deploys and operates applications on cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred).

Owns assigned software components end-to-end, from development through deployment and support.

Manages own timelines and deadlines, developing realistic estimates for assigned work and consistently delivering on schedule without close supervision.

Manages and prioritizes multiple concurrent tasks and projects, adjusting priorities as needs change and keeping the Chief Engineer informed of progress, risks, and potential delays.

Performs field work as required, including traveling to project sites to collect data, install and configure software on field devices, and troubleshoot deployed systems.

Participates in code reviews and technical discussions, providing constructive feedback.

Conducts technical research and evaluates technologies to support project needs.

Contributes to documentation, reporting, and proposal support as needed.

Supports special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

A master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate are of specialization; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience required.

As part of the selection process, candidates will be required to complete an in-person technical development exercise at the FAU Boca Raton campus. The exercise must be completed independently, without the use of AI coding assistants or other external assistance. Reasonable accommodations are available upon request.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

Experience with embedded devices, sensors, or IoT field deployments.

Salary:

$75,000 - $100,000 annually.
