Senior Staff Software Engineer, Institutional Exchange
About the role
For our client, we are seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer, Institutional Exchange to join the team of a leader in the Finance & Insurance space.
This role will shape the technical strategy for a mission-critical trading domain, driving multi-quarter initiatives from concept through delivery. You will lead the design of ultra-low-latency systems that support institutional market activity across cloud and colocated environments. The position also requires strong cross-functional leadership to align senior stakeholders, uphold quality standards for always-on markets, and mentor engineers while remaining hands-on in the codebase.
Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available
Compensation: $262,650 – $309,000 annually
Responsibilities
Own the technical strategy for a core exchange domain, driving multi-quarter initiatives from concept to delivery.
Lead design of ultra-low-latency trading systems across cloud and colocated environments.
Drive technical alignment across exchange, prime, and derivatives teams, securing commitment from senior leaders.
Set quality standards across teams including testing, failover design, and operational procedures for 24/7 markets.
Contribute hands-on while guiding other senior engineers and tech leads.
Mentor junior engineers to cultivate future technical leadership within the team.
Qualifications
10+ years of software engineering experience with significant ownership in trading or exchange systems.
Expertise in low-latency distributed systems with proficiency in Java, C++, or Go.
Architectural ownership of complete trading platforms including order management and real-time risk.
Ability to influence technical direction across teams without direct authority.
Experience in managing latency-sensitive systems in both on-prem and cloud environments.
Interest in crypto and institutional markets; deep crypto knowledge is a plus but not mandatory.
Capability to use generative AI responsibly within software development processes.
