Description

The Staff Engineer provides technical leadership for the Devices Cloud platform, owning the architecture, development, deployment, and operational excellence of distributed cloud services responsible for managing millions of connected IoT devices. This role combines deep software engineering expertise with technical leadership, driving cross-functional initiatives, mentoring engineers, and delivering scalable, secure, and highly available systems across global cloud infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of global cloud-native IoT backend services using Python and REST APIs.

Develop high-performance distributed systems while optimizing PostgreSQL data models for global scalability and resilience.

Build and operate containerized applications within Kubernetes, ensuring operational reliability and efficient networking.

Implement observability and metrics to proactively manage system performance and resolve complex production incidents.

Drive application security, compliance, and engineering standards while addressing technical debt to maintain platform health.

Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver high-impact capabilities and serve as the escalation point for high-risk engineering challenges.

Make architectural decisions balancing business objectives, technical risk, and long-term maintainability.

Foster a culture of ownership and operational excellence while mentoring engineers through technical coaching and guidance.

Qualifications

Expert-level Python development, RESTful API design, and Django-based distributed backend architecture.

PostgreSQL administration, including performance tuning, indexing, replication, and query optimization.

Kubernetes deployment, Docker container management, and cloud-native application development.

Distributed systems architecture, service-oriented design, Linux troubleshooting, and IoT device communication/remote management.

CI/CD, Git, automated testing, and release management workflows.

Secure software engineering, including authentication, authorization, RBAC, and API security.

Observability platforms (metrics, logging, tracing), performance analysis, and production debugging.

Demonstrated leadership of cross-functional technical initiatives and a systems-thinking mindset for complex, cross-technology issues.

The compensation for this full time salaried role ranges between $155,000-$185,000. Individual compensation packages are based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, training, and market conditions.
