About The Role

The Sr. Lead AI Engineer role at Capital One offers an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of artificial intelligence and machine learning innovation within the banking sector. As a key member of the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers, to develop and deploy AI-powered solutions that significantly impact how the bank operates and how customers engage with its services. Your responsibilities will encompass designing, developing, testing, and supporting advanced AI systems, including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, and governance frameworks. This role provides a platform to influence the technical vision and long-term roadmap of foundational AI systems, ensuring responsible and scalable deployment of AI technologies across the organization.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in engineering, mathematics, and AI, with extensive experience in deploying scalable AI solutions. A minimum of 6 years of experience in programming with Python, Go, Scala, or Java is required, along with a relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or related fields. Preferred qualifications include at least 7 years of experience in cloud-based AI system deployment, expertise in designing and supporting complex AI architectures, and a proven ability to lead and mentor engineering teams. Candidates should demonstrate a passion for staying current with the latest AI research, strong communication skills, and the capability to translate scientific advancements into practical, production-ready solutions.

Responsibilities

Partner with multidisciplinary teams to develop AI-powered products that enhance operational efficiency and customer engagement.

Design, develop, test, and deploy AI software components, including foundation models, large language models, similarity search systems, and governance frameworks.

Leverage a broad stack of open-source and SaaS AI technologies, such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, and PyTorch, to build scalable solutions.

Invent and implement state-of-the-art optimization techniques for large-scale AI systems to improve performance metrics such as scalability, latency, throughput, and cost efficiency.

Contribute to the technical vision and strategic roadmap for foundational AI systems, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and industry best practices.

Evaluate and incorporate emerging AI research and techniques, applying them judiciously to enhance existing systems and develop innovative solutions.

Ensure all AI systems adhere to ethical standards, governance policies, and regulatory requirements, emphasizing responsible AI practices.
