Overview
A growing enterprise technology organisation is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, develop, and deliver scalable cloud-based applications and services. This role focuses primarily on backend development while contributing to frontend initiatives as needed. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment, partnering with architects, engineers, and business stakeholders to build high-performance digital platforms, APIs, and customer-facing applications.
The position requires strong experience with cloud-native solutions, microservices architecture, modern software engineering practices, and DevOps-driven delivery. The ideal candidate is passionate about developing reliable, scalable products and driving technical excellence across the software development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and distributed applications.
Develop cloud-native microservices leveraging AWS technologies and modern development frameworks.
Create and support RESTful APIs and system integrations.
Contribute to technical architecture discussions and solution design initiatives.
Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to the technology stack.
Build proof-of-concept solutions to validate architecture and engineering approaches.
Refactor and modernise existing applications to improve scalability, performance, and maintainability.
Collaborate with engineering teams to create reusable components and shared services.
Promote standardisation and reduce duplicate technical efforts across projects.
Participate in Agile development activities, including planning, estimation, and delivery.
Partner with architects, engineering leadership, and stakeholders to align solutions with enterprise standards.
Support testing, deployment, and release management processes.
Coordinate user acceptance testing activities and gather feedback from stakeholders.
Track defects, enhancements, and feature requests using issue management tools.
Identify, communicate, and mitigate project risks and technical challenges.
Prepare and review technical documentation, architecture artefacts, and solution designs.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
6 to 8 years of experience developing large-scale web, mobile, or API-driven applications.
Strong experience designing scalable, high-performance microservices and backend systems.
Expertise with:
Node.js
TypeScript
AWS cloud services
AWS serverless technologies
MongoDB
REST APIs
SQL and NoSQL databases
Experience designing and implementing system integrations.
Solid understanding of cloud architecture and distributed systems.
Experience working within Agile software development environments.
Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and related tooling, including source control, automated builds, containerisation, and deployment automation.
Familiarity with Docker, containers, and modern DevOps practices.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Adaptability and ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Experience with:
