About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced and innovative Director of Software Engineering to join JPMorgan Chase within the Corporate Technology - HR, Pay & Time Technology division. This pivotal role offers an opportunity to lead the development of mission-critical applications that support Compensation, Benefits, Payroll, and Time management for one of the world's largest financial institutions. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background with hands-on expertise in designing, building, and operating scalable, resilient, multi-region cloud applications on AWS. You will be responsible for setting engineering standards, driving innovation, and ensuring operational excellence across multiple application teams. This role requires a strategic thinker who can balance rapid delivery with operational stability, security, and compliance, all while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5+ years in leadership roles managing technical teams. Formal training or certifications in software engineering concepts are required. Deep hands-on expertise in AWS cloud services, including serverless design patterns such as Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, EventBridge, and Step Functions, is essential. Strong programming skills in Java (Spring Boot and Spring framework) and Python (FastAPI, Flask) are mandatory. Experience in designing and operating multi-region active-active applications with high availability and disaster recovery is critical. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in full-stack development, including modern front-end frameworks like React and TypeScript, and API-first design using GraphQL and REST. Experience with AI-native development, including agentic workflows, prompt engineering, and tools like Claude Code and Copilot, is highly desirable. Knowledge of building MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers and custom conversational agents integrated with platforms such as Moveworks is preferred. Additionally, familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, automated testing, security best practices, and experience in regulated industries are required. Domain expertise in Compensation, Benefits, Payroll, or Time management systems is advantageous.
Responsibilities
Architect, build, and operate highly scalable, mission-critical applications on AWS utilizing serverless design patterns to support Compensation, Benefits, Payroll, and Time functions.
Design and maintain multi-region active-active architectures to ensure continuous availability, resiliency, and self-healing capabilities for a globally distributed enterprise environment.
Lead hands-on development across the full technology stack, including Web, Mobile, and conversational interfaces, establishing standards for secure, maintainable, and high-quality code.
Drive AI-native engineering initiatives, implementing agentic workflows, prompt and loop engineering, and AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery without compromising controls.
Develop MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers and custom agents that facilitate high-accuracy, low-latency interactions with conversational platforms like Moveworks, incorporating grounding, tool/function calling, and guardrails to prevent hallucinations.
Establish and enforce modern engineering practices such as CI/CD, TDD, Infrastructure as Code, automated security scanning, and observability to ensure operational excellence.
Manage a portfolio of applications, balancing rapid iterative development with operational stability, security, and compliance requirements, especially within regulated environments.
Promote secure-by-design development practices, supporting controls, statutory and tax considerations, segregation of duties, and access management.
Collaborate with product, platform, and operational stakeholders to translate business needs into pragmatic, high-quality technical solutions. Mentor and grow engineering teams while fostering an inclusive, diverse, and respectful work culture.
Set strategic direction and governance for agentic AI-enabled engineering and SDLC/TLM automation initiatives to improve speed, quality, and operational metrics, including AI-orchestrated workflows and automated testing modernization.
Leverage tools within the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and automation capabilities, including AI-assisted development, to enhance automation value and support large-scale capacity initiatives.
