About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Principal Software Engineer to join J.P. Morgan’s Payments Technology team within the Commercial and Investment Bank division. This leadership role offers an exciting opportunity to spearhead the integration of artificial intelligence into our software development lifecycle (SDLC) and production development lifecycle (PDLC). The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and operationalizing AI-powered solutions that enhance the security, scalability, and efficiency of our banking systems. This role demands a strategic thinker with deep expertise in AI/LLMs, agentic development patterns, and enterprise-grade software engineering. You will influence multiple teams across the organization, ensuring the adoption of best practices and continuous improvement in AI-enabled engineering processes, ultimately driving innovation and operational excellence at scale.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background with at least 10 years of applied experience in software engineering, complemented by formal training or certifications in relevant fields. Deep expertise in AI/LLMs and their application within software engineering workflows—including coding, design, security, testing, and deployment—is essential. Hands-on experience with agentic systems, orchestration tools, and integration patterns such as MCP, A2A, and function/tool calling is required. Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams through complex projects, manage ambiguity, and align stakeholders at all levels of the organization is critical. Excellent communication skills are necessary to translate technical concepts into business outcomes and to manage relationships with senior stakeholders. A thorough understanding of responsible AI practices, security, resiliency, and controls at scale is also required. Candidates with backgrounds in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, or related fields will be preferred.
Responsibilities
Lead the development and execution of an AI-native SDLC and PDLC framework, covering architecture, coding, security, testing, release, and observability phases.
Operationalize agentic AI patterns and toolchains, including LLM orchestration, skills, context engineering, and MCP-based integrations to streamline development workflows.
Implement responsible AI practices in production environments by establishing guardrails, evaluation metrics, monitoring systems, and auditable workflows to ensure compliance and safety.
Collaborate with application development leaders and platform owners to identify high-impact AI use cases, validate their value, and scale production adoption across teams.
Translate engineering workflows into AI-enabled capabilities that reduce developer toil, enhance productivity, and support autonomous operations.
Align with business and technology stakeholders to design controls, security protocols, and platform standards for AI deployment and integration.
Oversee multiple technological and process initiatives across departments to meet firm-wide objectives related to speed, scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
Manage strategic projects focused on system design, testing, operational stability, and continuous improvement of AI-enabled systems.
Interface with senior executives and stakeholders to drive consensus, set priorities, and communicate technical strategies effectively.
Establish and scale multi-department strategies for agentic AI-enabled engineering, including automation of SDLC/TLM workflows, release governance, and incident response protocols.
Leverage expertise in enterprise toolchains and AI-assisted development to promote cross-domain reuse and capacity unlocking across the organization.
