About The Role

The Distinguished AI Engineer will play a vital role within Capital One’s Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, which is dedicated to advancing AI capabilities and delivering impactful solutions across the organization. This position involves collaborating with cross-functional teams comprising engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers to develop and deploy innovative AI products that transform how the bank serves its customers and supports its internal operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining sophisticated AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, and model governance. They will leverage a broad array of open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, and PyTorch to build scalable and efficient AI systems. Additionally, they will contribute to the technical vision and long-term roadmap of foundational AI systems at Capital One, ensuring alignment with business goals and industry best practices.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical foundation, a passion for innovation, and extensive experience in AI and machine learning. Candidates should have a minimum of 8 years of experience in developing AI algorithms or related technologies, with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; a master’s degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience is also acceptable. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, or Java is essential. Preferred qualifications include significant experience deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, and demonstrated leadership in architecting complex AI systems. Experience with AI model optimization, inference techniques, and applying state-of-the-art research in production environments is highly valued. Excellent communication skills, the ability to articulate complex AI concepts clearly, and experience mentoring engineering teams are also desirable.

Responsibilities

Partner with multidisciplinary teams to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer experiences and operational efficiencies.

Design, develop, and support AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, and governance tools.

Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, and PyTorch to build scalable AI systems.

Innovate and implement state-of-the-art optimization techniques to improve the performance, scalability, cost-efficiency, latency, and throughput of AI models in production.

Contribute to the strategic vision and roadmap for foundational AI systems, ensuring alignment with business objectives and industry standards.

Ensure responsible AI practices by implementing guardrails, governance, and observability measures to maintain model integrity and compliance.

Stay current with the latest AI research and emerging technologies, applying relevant innovations to enhance existing systems and develop new solutions.

Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to foster a culture of innovation and technical excellence.
