Embedded Flight Software Engineer - FPGA/Linux Systems

6 month contract to hire

Fully Remote

Intuitive Machines is seeking a Senior Embedded Flight Software Engineer specializing in FPGA and embedded Linux development. This position may also be performed remotely within the U.S. In this role, you will work on a variety of challenging projects including SDA's Tranche Tracking Layer Satellite Constellation, the Maxar 300 bus, and proliferated LEO constellations.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement FPGA firmware and embedded Linux software for flight systems
  • Develop PetaLinux and Yocto-based Linux distributions for spacecraft embedded systems
  • Design, develop, and maintain FPGA IP cores using VHDL/Verilog for space applications
  • Develop, document, and maintain architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces, and designs for FPGA and embedded Linux flight software systems
  • Implement hardware/software co-design solutions integrating FPGA logic with embedded Linux applications
  • Develop software verification plans, unit level and open loop test suites, and procedures, executing the test procedures and documenting test results to ensure that software systems requirements are met
  • Perform software and firmware product life cycle management
  • Develop, select, tailor, and deploy software processes, tools, and metrics for FPGA and embedded Linux development
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for FPGA, embedded Linux, and hardware/software integration

Requirements:

Basic Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or related field. Four additional years of experience may be substituted for a degree.
  • 10+ years of embedded software or FPGA development experience
  • Proficiency in VHDL or Verilog for FPGA development
  • Experience with Xilinx development tools (Vivado, Vitis, etc.)
  • Embedded C/C++ programming skills for Linux environments
  • Experience with PetaLinux and/or Yocto build systems
  • Basic understanding of Agile methodologies and the software development life cycle
  • Experience with Software version control (Gitlab or similar)

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience with Xilinx Zynq or Zynq UltraScale+ SoC platforms
  • RTOS experience (ex. FreeRTOS, VxWorks) alongside Linux
  • Familiarity with device driver development for Linux kernel
  • Experience with high-speed interfaces: PCIe, Ethernet, SpaceWire, SPI, I2C
  • Knowledge of AXI bus protocols and DMA architectures
  • Development experience with Python for test automation and scripting
  • Familiarity with NASA's cFS/cFE framework
  • Basic understanding of spacecraft subsystems: power, ADCS, thermal, propulsion, communications
  • Experience with radiation-tolerant FPGA design techniques
  • Familiar with Jira, Jama, Git, and unit test tools
  • Experience with FPGA simulation tools (ModelSim, Questa, XSIM)
