About the role

Position Summary

The Embedded Software Engineer will work closely with Bechtel Medical's Embedded Systems Electrical Engineer to develop the firmware and embedded software used across the VOX line of wound-therapy products. This is an early-career role intended for an engineer with a strong programming foundation and hands-on exposure to embedded systems who wants to grow into increasing ownership of a medical-device software platform. Initial responsibilities will focus on learning the existing hardware and software architecture, writing and debugging firmware, supporting prototype and PCB bring-up, and implementing product features. We do not expect this person to arrive knowing every technology used in the system; we are looking for someone curious, adaptable, hands-on, and eager to learn.

Key Responsibilities

Embedded Software Development

Write, test, debug, and maintain embedded C/C++ firmware for current and future VOX products.

Implement and improve software that controls pumps, valves, sensors, displays, alarms, batteries, user-interface functions, and other device hardware.

Develop application logic, state machines, peripheral interfaces, and communication functions with guidance from the broader engineering team.

Learn and work within the product's existing microcontroller, RTOS, and software architecture, taking on increasing ownership as experience grows.

Use version control and established development practices to keep code organized, reviewable, documented, and reproducible.

Hardware / Software Integration

Work side by side with the Embedded Systems Electrical Engineer to understand hardware behavior and translate product needs into working software.

Participate in PCB bring-up, prototype builds, hardware/software integration, and troubleshooting of new and existing designs.

Read component datasheets and basic schematics, and use embedded debugging tools and lab equipment as needed to understand system behavior.

Create small test programs, scripts, or bench setups to evaluate sensors, pumps, motors, valves, displays, communication interfaces, and other components.

Testing, Documentation, and Product Support

Develop and execute software and system-level tests to confirm that new features and design changes behave as intended.

Investigate software and hardware/software issues, identify root causes, and work with the engineering team to implement and verify solutions.

Support software requirements, design documentation, release notes, verification records, and other documentation required for medical-device development.

Support manufacturing programming, production test, and field troubleshooting when software or embedded electronics are involved.

Grow into broader responsibility for firmware architecture, controlled software releases, verification, and sustaining engineering as capability develops.

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline; Software Engineering or Computer Engineering backgrounds are highly preferred.

At least 1 year of meaningful hands-on experience working on an embedded systems or firmware project; 1-3 years is preferred. Relevant professional, internship, co-op, academic, or substantial project experience may be considered.

Experience programming in C and/or C++ and a willingness to continue developing strong embedded-software skills.

Basic understanding of microcontrollers and how software interacts with physical hardware.

Familiarity with Git or another version-control system.

Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn unfamiliar tools and technologies.

Ability to work closely with electrical and other engineers in a hands-on product-development environment.

Preferred:

Experience with an RTOS, including Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or a similar platform.

Exposure to common embedded interfaces such as GPIO, I2C, SPI, UART, ADC, PWM, or timers.

Experience using a debugger or basic electronics lab equipment, or an interest in learning hardware debugging.

Experience with Python or another scripting language for testing, automation, or development utilities.

Experience working on a product that includes sensors, motors, pumps, valves, displays, batteries, or other electromechanical hardware.

Experience taking an embedded project beyond a classroom exercise into a working prototype or physical product.

Bonus:

Experience with medical devices or another regulated product environment; prior medical-device experience is not required.

Familiarity with software testing, requirements, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, or related development practices.

Experience with PCB design tools, mobile applications, connected devices, manufacturing test, or production programming.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work at a computer workstation for extended periods.

Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. of test equipment, prototypes, or related materials.

Ability to work in an engineering lab environment, including use of hand tools, prototype hardware, and electronic test instrumentation.

Work Environment

This role is based primarily in an office and engineering-lab setting and requires frequent hands-on collaboration with prototype hardware and cross-functional engineering team members.
