Junior AI Software Engineer
About the role
By clicking Apply, you'll be taken to the Via website to complete your application. This doesn't guarantee you'll be matched to this specific role - Via reviews every application (AI first, then a human checks the fit) and shortlists the right candidates. Your profile also stays active for other relevant roles on the platform, and stays anonymous until you match. It takes just a few minutes.
Salary: $90,000–$120,000 per year (estimated)
Location: Remote, US / San Francisco, CA
Working arrangement: Remote-first
Full-time | Permanent
Experience: Graduate / Entry Level
About the opportunity
Via is partnering with a growing AI technology company to recruit a Junior Software Engineer to work on AI-powered developer tools and agent-based software.
This is an early-career opportunity designed for new graduates, junior engineers and developers with up to two years of professional experience. You don't need years of commercial experience or a background at a major technology company – strong technical projects can demonstrate what you can do.
You'll build real product features across AI agent workflows, APIs, developer tools and browser-based applications, working primarily with Python, JavaScript and TypeScript.
The team is particularly interested in candidates who can show something they've actually built, tested and debugged. This could come from a university project, internship, open-source contribution, personal project, deployed application or professional experience.
You'll also work directly with AI coding agents, learning how to use them effectively while reviewing their output, identifying failures and maintaining ownership of the final software.
What you'll be doing
Build features for AI-powered products and developer tools
Work with Python, JavaScript and TypeScript
Develop and integrate APIs and browser-based functionality
Build and improve AI agent workflows
Use AI coding agents as part of your development process
Review AI-generated code and identify potential issues
Take small projects from initial problem through to working implementation
Write automated tests using tools such as pytest and Playwright
Test real user journeys and make sure features work end to end
Investigate bugs and technical failures to identify root causes
Build regression tests to prevent issues from recurring
Work with Git and modern software-development workflows
Improve the reliability and safety of AI-assisted software releases
Collaborate with experienced engineers and receive direct technical mentorship
What we're looking for
This role is deliberately open to candidates at the beginning of their software engineering careers.
You'll ideally have:
0–2 years of professional software engineering experience, although professional experience isn't essential
Working knowledge of Python, JavaScript or TypeScript
Familiarity with Git
An understanding of web development or APIs
At least one meaningful software project you can discuss in detail
Experience building, testing and debugging software
Some hands-on experience using AI coding tools or coding agents
Confidence investigating problems rather than simply applying quick fixes
An interest in AI, developer tooling and agent-based software
Strong written communication and attention to detail
A willingness to take ownership of your work and learn quickly
New graduates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Your experience could come from university coursework, internships, open-source projects, hackathons, personal projects or professional software development.
Useful but not essential
You don't need experience with everything below, but any exposure to these areas would be valuable:
MCP or AI agent frameworks
Agent evaluation or testing
CLI or developer-tool development
React or browser-based applications
pytest or Playwright
Cloud platforms
Docker or containers
CI/CD
Infrastructure as code
Open-source development
Building and deploying your own applications
Why apply?
Estimated salary of $90,000–$120,000 depending on experience
Fully remote-first working
Option to work from San Francisco
Specifically designed for graduates and early-career engineers
Direct mentorship while working on production software
Hands-on experience building AI-native products
Work with modern AI coding agents and developer tooling
Own real engineering projects from development through testing and release
Build experience across backend, APIs, browser applications and AI workflows
Strong emphasis on practical ability rather than pedigree
Candidates working under valid OPT are welcome
Eligible H-1B sponsorship is supported
