Title: Senior Software Engineer – Fraud Prevention
Location: Hybrid in New York, NY
Duration: ~12 months
Pay Range: $64-69/hr.
Contract Type: W2 Contract
Job Description:
Author, maintain, and optimize fraud rules and policies across real-time fraud decisioning engines to protect customers from account takeover (ATO) and other fraud.
Design, develop, and maintain backend services within the fraud-prevention technology stack.
Implement new features, API changes, integrations, and production code improvements while maintaining reliability, performance, and quality.
Use AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex to accelerate rule authoring and backend service development, with appropriate human review and testing.
Translate policy and analytics requirements into precise, testable rule logic, including thresholds, fraud signals, and link-analysis weights.
Tune fraud detection logic to improve fraud-catch precision while reducing friction for legitimate customers.
Test changes end-to-end using pre-release testing and deployment tooling.
Support safe production releases through silent/shadow-mode validation, change-request approvals, and controlled rollouts.
Contribute to engineering quality through design documentation, code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, and observability.
Monitor production services and support on-call activities, troubleshooting issues and using observability dashboards to track service health, rule performance, latency, and match rates.
Collaborate with Policy, Analytics, Data Science, and Product teams to respond to emerging fraud attacks and improve detection coverage.
Skills/Abilities:
Strong backend software engineering skills with experience building and supporting production services.
Proficiency in a server-side programming language, particularly Java; Python or Node.js experience is also valuable.
Strong experience designing and maintaining RESTful APIs and integrations.
Experience with relational and/or NoSQL database technologies.
Experience with server-side frameworks such as Spring MVC, Express, or Django.
Hands-on experience contributing to production services, including production-quality code, automated testing, deployment, and on-call support.
Proficiency with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar tools, with the ability to validate and review AI-generated output.
Strong understanding of Agile development, object-oriented design, and software engineering best practices.
Strong communication and collaboration skills across engineering, policy, analytics, and product teams.
Ability to learn quickly and adapt in a dynamic, fast-moving environment.
Experience:
2+ years of professional software engineering experience building and contributing to backend services.
Experience developing backend applications using Java or another server-side programming language.
Experience with RESTful APIs, database technologies, and server-side frameworks.
Experience supporting production services, including testing, deployment, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
Experience with AI-assisted software development tools and the ability to evaluate and validate generated code.
Experience with Agile development methodologies and modern software engineering practices.
Preferred Experience:
Familiarity with business rules engines such as Drools, including authoring and debugging rule sets.
Experience translating fraud or risk policies into rule logic.
Experience with risk decisioning, case disposition, trust & safety, or fraud-prevention systems.
Experience contributing to backend services at scale, including reliability and performance optimization.
Exposure to formal release and change-management processes.
Experience with observability and monitoring tools.
Interest or experience in fraud prevention, trust & safety, or risk systems.
Additional Information:
This is a senior-level backend software engineering role focused on fraud prevention and real-time risk decisioning.
Experience with Java, REST APIs, production backend services, AI coding tools, and fraud/risk systems is strongly preferred.
Candidates should be comfortable collaborating across Engineering, Policy, Analytics, Data Science, and Product teams.
Hybrid position based in New York, NY.
