About The Role

The Distinguished AI Engineer role at Capital One is a remote-eligible position designed for an expert in artificial intelligence and machine learning who is passionate about building responsible, scalable, and innovative AI systems. As part of the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, you will play a pivotal role in advancing Capital One’s AI capabilities by designing, developing, and deploying state-of-the-art AI models and platforms. This role involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams including research scientists, engineers, product managers, and technical program managers to deliver AI-powered products that fundamentally change how the company interacts with its customers and supports its operations.

You will be responsible for working on foundational AI components such as large language models, similarity search, model evaluation, and governance, utilizing a broad stack of open-source and SaaS AI technologies. Your expertise will contribute to the technical vision and long-term roadmap of AI systems at Capital One, ensuring the delivery of responsible, efficient, and impactful AI solutions. This position offers the flexibility of remote work and is ideal for a technically deep professional who thrives on solving complex problems and driving innovation in AI.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a robust educational background with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or related fields, complemented by extensive experience in AI and machine learning development. Specifically, candidates should have at least 8 years of experience developing AI algorithms or technologies, or 6 years with a Master’s degree. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, or Java is essential, with a minimum of 8 years of experience in software development. Preferred qualifications include experience deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, and a proven track record of architecting complex AI systems, including large language models, similarity search, and vector databases. Leadership experience in mentoring engineering teams and influencing cross-functional stakeholders is highly valued. Strong communication skills, a passion for research, and a deep understanding of hardware and software optimization techniques are also important for success in this role.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer engagement and operational efficiency.

Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, guardrails, and model evaluation.

Leverage a diverse stack of open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, and PyTorch to build scalable AI solutions.

Invent and implement state-of-the-art optimization techniques for large language models to improve performance metrics like scalability, cost-efficiency, latency, and throughput.

Contribute to the technical vision and long-term strategic roadmap of foundational AI systems, ensuring responsible AI practices and governance are embedded in all solutions.

Stay current with the latest research in AI and machine learning, applying innovative techniques judiciously to production systems.

Mentor junior engineers and influence cross-functional teams to foster a culture of innovation and technical excellence.
