About The Role

The Lead AI Engineer at Capital One plays a pivotal role in advancing our AI capabilities by designing, developing, and deploying scalable AI systems that impact millions of customers and internal stakeholders. You will collaborate with a diverse team of engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers to create innovative AI-powered products. Your expertise will contribute to shaping the technical vision and long-term roadmap of our foundational AI systems, ensuring they are responsible, efficient, and aligned with business objectives. This role involves working with cutting-edge open-source and SaaS AI technologies, optimizing large language models, and implementing state-of-the-art techniques to enhance system performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency. You will be instrumental in translating scientific research into practical solutions that redefine how banking services are delivered and experienced.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate possesses a strong technical foundation complemented by a passion for innovation and problem-solving. A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or related fields with at least four years of experience in developing AI and ML algorithms is required. Alternatively, a master's degree with a minimum of two years of relevant experience is acceptable. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Scala, or Java is essential, with at least four years of hands-on experience. Candidates should demonstrate a deep understanding of hardware, software, and AI systems, along with the ability to adapt quickly to evolving technologies. Experience with deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, and familiarity with AI development frameworks and optimization techniques, will be highly valued.

Responsibilities

Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products that enhance operational efficiency and customer engagement.

Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, and governance tools.

Leverage a broad stack of open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, Nemo Guardrails, and PyTorch to build scalable AI solutions.

Invent and implement advanced optimization techniques for large language models to improve performance metrics such as latency, throughput, and cost efficiency.

Contribute to the technical vision and strategic roadmap of AI systems, ensuring alignment with responsible AI principles and business goals.

Conduct rigorous model evaluation, experimentation, and observability to ensure reliability, fairness, and compliance of AI systems.

Stay current with emerging AI research and industry best practices, applying innovative techniques to enhance existing systems.

Mentor junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
